Upptäckte antika romerska mynt under lek utanför fritids

Bjarne, a nine-year-old boy, made an archaeological discovery during the summer of 2022. He sent pictures of the find to the state’s archaeological authority, who determined that it was a denarius – a silver coin from the Roman Empire. The coin depicts Emperor Marcus Aurelius, who ruled the empire from 161-180 AD.

During a press conference this week, the archaeologist and Bjarne jointly presented the discovery. The chief of the archaeological authority, Uta Halle, is overwhelmed by the significant media interest in the coin. She jokingly states that the media attention is so intense that it is as if they have found a Roman gold treasure that can pay off all of Bremen’s debts in one go.

The location where the coin was found is outside the borders of the former Roman Empire. Possible explanations include its use in trade between borders, payment to a mercenary, or being brought back as a souvenir by a traveler.

Ownership of the coin is currently unclear and will be discussed between the authority and Bjarne’s family. However, they agree that it should be displayed in a museum. Bjarne expresses his disappointment at being the only one who has seen the coin, stating that it would be sad if only he could view it.
