Dorotea has overtaken Bjurholm in terms of population. Previously this year, Dorotea took over the last place as the smallest municipality in Sweden from Bjurholm. However, after just over a month, Bjurholm has regained its position.
Bjurholm has been the smallest municipality in the country since its formation in 1938. However, until the end of May this year, Dorotea surpassed Bjurholm by a single resident, with a population of 2,378 compared to Bjurholm’s 2,377. During this time, Bjurholm’s population increased by six residents, while Dorotea’s decreased by 36.
But according to the latest statistics from the Swedish Statistics Bureau (SCB) for June, Dorotea once again has more residents. ”Dorotea was Sweden’s smallest municipality for one month. Now it’s Bjurholm again. As of June 30, Dorotea had 15 more residents than Bjurholm,” says Lovisa Sköld, a population statistician at SCB, in a press release.
Currently, Bjurholm has 2,363 residents, while Dorotea has 2,378.
During the first half of the year, the population increased in 128 out of Sweden’s 190 municipalities, according to SCB. It decreased in 161 municipalities, and in one municipality, Alvesta, it remained unchanged.
At the same time, the population growth in Sweden was the lowest in 17 years, mainly due to more people emigrating, according to SCB. Additionally, there were 5.5 percent fewer births during the first half of the year compared to the same period last year.
