Rethinking the Title: Following Carl C Hamilton’s Statement – ”Do Not Speak to the Media”

Liberal Party Leadership Silences Politicians Amid Controversy

The storm surrounding Carl B Hamilton has forced the Liberal Party leadership to silence its politicians, according to sources to Aftonbladet. However, there is growing discontent within the party about the situation they have found themselves in. A party insider stated that many are unhappy about the current state of affairs, which they believe is a consequence of the Tidö agreement that many foresaw.

The Liberal Party has been embroiled in a storm after parliament member Carl B Hamilton made comments about the party’s stance on the Sweden Democrats (SD). While Hamilton openly criticized SD member Richard Jomshof’s statements about Islam, he stated in an interview with TV4 that he stands behind the decision not to vote Jomshof out as chairman of the Justice Committee. When asked further, Hamilton said that the line would be crossed if SD had said the same things about Jews as they currently do about Muslims.

The party, however, is standing behind the parliament member and maintains that Jomshof should not be voted out. According to sources, the party has instructed its representatives not to speak to the media and to refer questions to the party’s press office. Several liberal representatives contacted by Aftonbladet have followed this directive.

A liberal with inside knowledge agreed to be interviewed with a promise of anonymity. The individual believes that Hamilton’s comments are very serious, but also considers him a loyal party veteran. The source believes that Hamilton will continue to have the support of the party leadership as he has no history of inappropriate remarks. The source stated that the larger issue is the handling of Richard Jomshof. According to the source, Jomshof has been making these kinds of statements for years, and it is hardly a surprise that they have ended up in this situation. The source also mentioned that this was exactly what many warned about when they entered into the Tidö agreement.

Taking action to remove Jomshof is out of the question, according to the source. This would result in the collapse of the Tidö collaboration. The agreement was negotiated to prevent the Sweden Democrats from sitting in the government. Another source stated that SD’s actions are seen as a way to test the limits of the Tidö collaboration and the Liberal Party’s boundaries.

The Liberal Youth Alliance, like the party leadership, believes that the party should not vote out Richard Jomshof. The chairman, Erik Berg, stated that each party is responsible for its own parliament members. It would be strange if the Liberals were to determine who is suitable for different positions based on the question of parliament’s security interests.

The Youth Alliance is now calling on the party to initiate an investigation to review whether parliament members can be assessed based on security risks. Regarding Carl B Hamilton’s statements, Erik Berg believes that there should be consequences. Hamilton’s comments have been damaging to the party, and Berg hopes to hear from the leadership or the party board about further actions.

Aftonbladet has been unable to reach Carl B Hamilton for an interview, but he has apologized for his statement. Social Democratic Party leader Magdalena Andersson strongly reacted to Hamilton’s comments as well as the Liberal Party’s handling of the issue. She stated that the Sweden Democrats are a party with clear roots in Nazism, and if the line is drawn there, then one should distance oneself from them here and now. Andersson questioned the role the Liberals want to play in Swedish politics and how their support for the Sweden Democrats aligns with liberal values.
