Jonas Sjöstedt, the former leader of the Left Party, is running for the European Parliament, according to a report from Ekot in Sveriges Radio.
Sjöstedt announced on his Facebook page that he has accepted the nomination from his party chapter in Umeå to run for the European Parliament. He stated that he would like to participate in another election campaign as a candidate for his party and emphasized the power of the European Parliament in shaping policies. He expressed his desire to use that power to pursue leftist politics, strengthen climate policies, and promote the European Union as a collaboration between democratic countries rather than a superstate consolidating too much power in Brussels.
The party members will now decide on the list of candidates, which will be finalized on January 20th. The European elections are scheduled to take place on June 9th next year.
Sjöstedt served as the leader of the Left Party from 2012 to 2020, as a member of the Swedish Parliament from 2010 to 2020, and as a Member of the European Parliament from 1995 to 2006.
