Spanska högerns misslyckade första försök till maktövertag

Partido Popular, the conservative party in Spain, failed to form a government in their first attempt in the Spanish parliament on Wednesday. Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of the PP, presented a government proposal after his party received the most votes in the July 23rd election. However, the right-wing party lacked the necessary majority. Núñez Feijóo’s government proposal received 172 votes in favor, but 176 YES votes were required. 178 members of parliament voted against the proposal. A second attempt, where only more YES votes than NO votes are needed, is expected on Friday. However, this attempt also appears likely to fail. If so, the leader of the Socialist party, Pedro Sánchez, will have an opportunity to try. He also lacks a majority and may have to turn to separatist parties for necessary support. Wednesday’s vote set a two-month deadline for new elections in Spain if no government receives parliamentary support.
