Xavier Bettel, Luxemburg’s Prime Minister, is at risk of losing his position after nearly ten years as the country’s leader. His liberal Democratic Party (DP) is currently ranked third in the polls ahead of Sunday’s parliamentary elections. Even if the current three-party coalition with the Greens and the Social Democratic LSAP manages to maintain a majority, Bettel may still be forced to step down in favor of his current vice prime minister, LSAP leader and Health Minister Paulette Lenert. Former Defense and Finance Minister Luc Frieden also hopes to become prime minister if his Christian Social People’s Party (CSV), which tops the polls, can convince one of the ruling parties to switch coalitions. Unlike many other EU countries, migration is not a major issue in Luxembourg, where expensive housing prices have been one of the main concerns in the elections. From an EU perspective, the election is not very exciting, as all major parties are strongly pro-EU.
