Svenskt Näringsliv, a Swedish business federation, is urging for quicker development of expanded electricity production and strengthened power grids, despite broad support from the Swedish parliament for both new nuclear power and increased wind power. The organization’s CEO, Jan-Olof Jacke, argues that the state should play a more active role in ensuring that the expansion actually takes place. He suggests that the slow pace of development may be due to low electricity prices and a lack of interest in the issue. Jacke also calls for a research and development policy that safeguards Sweden’s position as a leading knowledge nation, as well as a functioning labor migration policy that allows for recruitment of international talent and fills the need for simpler jobs. According to Jacke, the competitiveness of Swedish business is crucial for both the climate transition and the country’s future as a welfare state.
