Giovanni Tartaglia Polcini, a prosecutor in Napoli, has been working for over 20 years on international efforts against organized crime and corruption. Italy has long been plagued by extensive illegal structures and mafia operations, particularly in Sicily. In recent years, however, the influence of the Sicilian mafia has decreased and the number of violent acts has been relatively low.

The key factors to this success include broad political consensus, allowing authorities to work in the long term, and targeting the mafia where it hurts the most: their finances.

”Organized crime’s true power lies in money, not weapons. The real power that enables them to take root in society is economic,” he says.
