Sporting advances to the quarterfinals of the domestic cup Taça de Portugal, thanks in large part to Sweden’s most goal-scoring player at the moment.
Forward Viktor Gyökeres first headed in 3-0 at the end of the first half against Tondela, a header from Nuno Santos’ cross. He then extended the lead right after the halftime break, taking advantage of a mistake and being in the right place at the right time.
Gyökeres was then substituted after just under an hour of play in the round of 16, which Sporting won 4-0. The quarterfinal, which has not been drawn yet, will be decided in February.
Tonight’s two cup goals now bring Gyökeres to 18 goals and ten assists (league, cup, and Europa League) in 22 matches during his debut season for Sporting. He leads the league in Portugal with Gyökeres as the second top scorer, and Sporting is also through to the knockout stage in the Europa League.
