The first parts of Raketskolan were completed in 1976. It was during the major expansion that problems started after the fire at Lomboloskolan.
Redoing renovations
New Raketskolan was inaugurated in 2012, but the construction was not done well, leading to major renovations just a year later.
Now it appears that the renovations were not very well done either. Many of the problems that are surfacing today can be traced back to the construction work done ten years ago.
– After extensive testing, we have found moisture, mold, and even fungal attacks in the organic materials, says Tommy Stridsman, property manager at Kirunabostäder.
Forced to close the entire school
In the new, taller part of the school, there are problems with the walls, in the older, lower part, there are problems with the floors, and the ventilation throughout the school has been poor.
This is why they now have to close the entire New Raketskolan, which has had students from preschool to ninth grade and is Kiruna’s largest primary school.
Taxpayers will bear the brunt
Tommy Stridsman cannot provide a more accurate estimate of the repair costs than a range of 25-50 million SEK.
There is a risk that almost the entire cost will fall on Kiruna municipality’s taxpayers.
In the clip, he explains why.
