EU öppnar plånboken för Polen – miljarder i stöd på väg

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and European Commission President

After years of dispute between Brussels and Warsaw, the EU’s financial tap is now on its way to opening again for Poland.

– Based on the reforms you have launched and the immediate actions taken on judicial independence, I have good news: next week the commission will take two decisions on EU support that is currently blocked for Poland, says Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at a press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Friday.

This means that Poland will be able to access 137 billion euros – equivalent to 1,500 billion Swedish kronor – from the EU’s regional aid and COVID-19 support fund.

The funds have been withheld due to the EU Commission’s long-standing criticism and concerns, especially regarding the independence of the judiciary in Poland.

Since Tusk took over as prime minister last fall after several years in opposition, his government has announced a complete reversal compared to Poland’s previous much more EU-skeptical policy.
